To empower women in marginalised communities through fitness and health. We’ll train a team of 10 Fitness Champions to offer free and subsidised exercise classes to people on low incomes in Kingsfold.
We’ve teamed up with Tribe Fitness to provide accredited qualifications in Fitness and Nutrition to women who wouldn’t normally get this opportunity. We will then support these women to offer free and subsidised exercise classes to people in the wider community. We’ll also develop a toolkit so the programme can be rolled out across Lancashire The project will be delivered in 4 phases over 12 months: 1. Hold a Women’s Health event at Penwortham Community Centre focussing on physical health, nutrition and mental health. At the same time will hold a community consultation to recruit women who are interested in becoming Fitness Champions. 2. Co-create the programme so it is culturally appropriate and addresses local need 3. Delivery of accredited Fitness and Nutrition courses 4. Support FCs to find employment.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project has the potential to transform women’s lives by providing opportunities they wouldn’t normally have. By offering accredited qualifications in Fitness and Nutrition, this project will provide women in Kingsfold with access to employment opportunities, which will have a lasting effect on generations to come. This project will educate women in nutrition, physical and mental health where there is currently a gap in provision and will empower women who want to take control of their own health and support people in their local community. Additional elements to the main programme will include an introduction to Counselling course, leading health walks, menopause talks etc
Steps to get it done:
In order for this project to reach its full potential and ensure its longevity, we will work alongside local partners including the Foodbank, schools, the Social Prescribing team, Progress Housing, local Councillors and Active health at SRBC. We have already met with these partners and staff at Penwortham Community Centre to ensure that we consider the needs of the community at every stage of the process and involve local people in its creation. We feel that it will improve pride in the community and the Fitness Champions and people attending the fitness classes will see Penwortham Community Centre as theirs and feel ownership of it within rather than it just being a building that doesn’t offer them anything.
