More about our impact
The environment
Adding flooring, blinds and drapes help to retain heat, plus creating smaller invididual spaces rather than one big room means less power is needed to heat the space We try to minimise the use of single use plastics at our events We buy event food locally to support local businesses and minimise wastage through transport
Volunteering, jobs & education
We currently have several volunteers helping to run the weekly homework/youth club, childrens library, over 60s lunches and monthly family fun mornings. Lots of residents have spoken to us about ideas they would like to help with such as slime making for children, photography skills, teaching English, language exchanges, etc. See here for more information: https://www.hackneyshowroom.com/volunteer-with-us/
Arts, culture & heritage
Hackney Showroom have already hosted an array of different theatre productions and cultural offerings including a 'Tastes from Africa' event hosted by actor Femi Elufowoju Jr prior to his theatre production 54:60 Africa which toured to various theatres and included a showing at Hackney Showroom that was open to local residents. Artist Andrew Mitchelson, a resident of Kings Crescent, collaborated with Brazillian artist Gustavo Ciriaco to run an amazing art workshop with local children during the October 2021 half term. The children learned to create shadow images based on stories as told by local older residents. It was a beautiful collaboration spanning the generations. We are fortunate to have this project running again in the February half term with younger children this time. Plus Hackney Showroom have loads more planned too: https://www.hackneyshowroom.com/whatson/
Activity, health and leisure
This has been difficult to move forward because of the Covid pandemic restrictions on numbers inside etc. However, there is a regular yoga class running in the space and we have trialed a chair based excersise class and there are occasional meditation sessions. We are currently in conversation with Hackney and various facilitators in the hope that we can start a regular programme of wellbing classes soon.
