We need your help to transform the Kings Crescent community space!!! The dream: a beautiful venue to host fun & inspiring activities & events that serve our diverse estate residents & wider community
The new space we have is a raw, fully accessible 360 square meter shop front unit which we will make habitable and beautiful with an interior fit-out. We’re so excited to be joining forces with local arts charity Hackney Showroom to transform this new unit into a dynamic community space and work together with the community to dream up new plans for activities and events for all. The TRA plan to deliver a timetable of activities in line with the wishes expressed by Kings Crescent residents. Feedback so far includes: cooking, street parties, book club, homework club, youth club, gentle exercise for older residents, music events. Hackney Showroom will deliver a programme of creative & cultural projects including: FUTUREHEADS - a holiday project for 8-11 year olds; Disco Loco - a family arts programme for the very young and their families; Hackney Showroom Young Actors - a high level skills based training for 16-25 year olds serious in a career in acting.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The needs of our community vary widely, and we’re committed to hosting activities & events that address this wide range of needs in our transformed community space. We are so thrilled to be able to enjoy a meaningful collaboration with Hackney Showroom and think this coming together of an estate group with an arts charity has bags of potential! Our contrasting strengths will really be an asset to the community - the TRA with our grassroots engagement with local residents, and Hackney Showroom with their expertise in conjuring up inspirational activity, is a recipe for a great future for our local community. The TRA committee is a mixture of residents from the old and new blocks, enabling participation across the whole estate; meaning a diverse range of skills, opinions, ideas, knowledge, worries, hopes and dreams will be heard. We already have a strong track record, engaging over 200 residents at previous events, and many residents regularly attending our family fun mornings.
Steps to get it done:
Kings Crescent Estate in Hackney was built in the 1960s but is currently in the midst of a large regeneration project. The estate is being transformed with a mix of new homes and improvements to existing homes on the estate. Phase 1 and 2 was completed in early 2018, which saw refurbishments to some existing blocks and 273 new homes being built - a mix of social rent (79), shared ownership (36) and outright sale (158). The estate was recently granted the planning permission to commence phase 3 and 4, which includes refurbishment to the remaining older blocks, and a further 200 or so homes being built. The next phases of regeneration are due to commence in late 2020. For more information on the Kings Crescent regeneration project: https://www.hackney.gov.uk/kings-crescent-estate We are excited to be partnering with Hackney Showroom on this venture as they bring a vast amount of knowledge, experience and connections. However, they are also a charity so also rely on fundraising.

Happy New Year! Sorry again for all of the unavoidable delays but I can finally confirm that we have bought all of the items that we said we would!! We are still working on the final reports so there will be more details to come but I've added lots of photos to the gallery of the new flooring, storage cupboards and lockers, blinds/soundproofing drapes and the lovely digital sign hanging in the window. We are very grateful to Hackney for helping transform the space so that there are now two spaces that can be used at the same time for different activities, as well as a lovely lobby area. Once that work was done during the Summer of 2021 we were able to do all of this. Huge thank you also to all of the staff at Spacehive and the GLA who have been incredibly supportive through this process. Finally, thank you all again, so much, for all of your individual contributions and for all of your support along this journey! It has been a bumpy ride with all of the Covid chaos on top of managing such a big project, but it's a relief to be at the end and we are loving the new space!!! We hope to meet you all at events and activities soon (when we are able to safely!) For updates on activities and events happening in our 'vibrant new community space' see here: https://kingscrescent.org/events-and-meetings/ https://www.hackneyshowroom.com/whatson/
After waiting for over a year, the work on the space has finally started!! Hackney's work to create 2 spaces along with a communal area and expanded office for Hackney Showroom has begun. Once the new structures are completed it will be onto the part that we raised the money for - the new flooring, blinds, storage and signage. Thank you again for your support with that! It is estimated that the work will take around 6 weeks to complete so we are hoping that the new space will be open ready for the Summer! In the meantime the TRA committee have continued to work with Hackney Showroom and we have lots of exciting plans ready to launch in the new space including a children's library, Futureheads youth programme, homework club, a street party on 14th August, a weekly lunch club for over 50s, volunteer opportunities, art projects, Disco Loco for pre-school children and much more! We will post more updates as the works progress. Hello everyone, I know it has been a while since we ran our crowdfunding campaign so I just wanted to give you an update... We've had a few delays this year but we are getting closer!!! Hackney Regeneration Team are kindly funding some building work in the space to create a flexible 2 studio space for multi-purpose activity, allowing the TRA and Hackney Showroom to run 2 different activities at the same time. Once that building work is done, then we can add the floors, blinds, storage and signage that we raised the funds for (thank you again for your contributions!). Fingers crossed it should all be complete early next year. Covid-19 has unfortunately halted a lot of our community plans for this year, but the TRA managed to launch a homework club and Hackney Showroom has launched a range of activities such as Futureheads and Disco Loco. More on their website: https://www.hackneyshowroom.com/ Source Partnership helped us to survey residents on Kings Crescent to find out what activities and events they would like to see happening once it is safe for us to do so. The results highlighted a community interest in engaging in activities, the most popular choices being fitness, food/cooking activities and language classes for adults, and a youth club for young people. Residents offered skills to support others including mentoring, CV writing, language skills and cooking. Full results here: https://kingscrescent.org/2020/11/26/community-survey-results/ The TRA are continuing to host meetings via Zoom to try to stay in touch with the community and continue to make plans ready for when we can meet together again in person. If anyone has any ideas for events and activities we can run in the new space next year or even virtually in the meantime please get in touch: email KingsCrescentN4@gmail.com If you are a resident of Kings Crescent and want to be kept informed of our plans please sign up to the TRA mailing list: http://eepurl.com/g-NGbD Happy holidays everyone and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2021!
