The idea
The Park offers several good through routes to the nursery, school, doctors, local shops, bus stops, the pub and the leisure complex at Cardigan Fields, encouraging people to walk and avoid the busy main roads. The Park is well used by many of the local residents and by the large student population, The Park is least well accessed from the Cardigan Road side, so we want to install a welcome sign and map by the main access point from that side, so those new to the Park can see what there is. More organisations are now organising events in the Park and it would be fantastic to have some boards to display posters on at each of the Park entrances and on the railings at the playground, and then more people will know about the full range of what is happening. Each has two poster spaces, one Friends, one other. The noticeboards will have the Friends of Burley Park web address on them and the website will list the up to date social media platforms and a brief introduction to the Friends
What we'll deliver
- 5 poster display boards
- 1 new Park entrance sign on Park View Road
Why it's a great idea
At the moment the events of the Friends of group are promoted by tying posters to various bits of railings at the Park entrances or onto the ends of benches or the frames of litter bins. This doesn't look official and isn't very smart, nor are they necessarily places that people know to look to for. A simple board that says events makes it clear that this is where to look and if well positioned will get more attention. When Park signage was renewed over ten years ago, funds didn't stretch to have a welcome board at either entrance on Park View Road. if the appeal exceeds its target that is the next ambition. The proposed signage reflects the recommendations from the recent consultation by Love Leeds Parks and the Parks department.

The Friends of Burley Park was established in around 2012 and raised the funds to plant the two orchard areas in 2014. After a quiet period it began to run regular Sunday volunteering in 2023, with a 10 -12 session on the second Sunday of most months. There is also a small group who meet on Monday and Tuesday morning to tend the ornamental beds by the cottage in the Park (Cardigan Lane). Group members designed the blossom circle and seating area (funded by the National Trust) in spring 2023. This winter we planted large numbers of bluebells, snowdrops and daffodils. There is a Community Picnic open to all park users on May 12th 12 -3. Burley Park is a space for everyone, please support the Friends and bring your ideas.
