Help the Hedgehogs in Mitcham

We are on a mission to raise awareness about the decline of hedgehogs and unite our local community to take part in meaningful conservation efforts for the hedgehogs that call Mitcham their home.

The idea

In 2020, hedgehogs were classified as 'vulnerable to extinction' on the UK Red List for Mammals. The State of Britain's Hedgehog Report 2022 indicated that there may be a stable population of hedgehogs in urban areas that could be recovering. This emphasises the importance of local actions to secure the future of hedgehogs. We are eager to support the hedgehogs that reside in Mitcham.

We will begin by focusing our efforts in the Pollards Hill ward, as we know there are hedgehogs on Mitcham Common. Our goal is to determine whether these hedgehogs are visiting local residential gardens and green spaces. We aim to unite the local community in taking supportive actions for wildlife conservation in their gardens and surrounding areas. These actions may include the creation of hedgehog highways and hedgehog-friendly green spaces.

What we'll deliver

  • A talk to explain the importance of Hedgehog conservation.
  • A Hedgehog event with education and crafts for the whole family.
  • A community walk through the local greenspaces.
  • Education and outreach support (for example hedgehog highway sign, loan footprint tunnel and/or trial camera)
  • Pop-up stall to attend local community events and greenspaces.

Why it's a great idea

By identifying areas where hedgehogs are found and promoting the establishment of hedgehog highways, we can directly influence the population of hedgehogs in this region. This initiative could also enhance future conservation efforts and the protection of green spaces in the area.

Hedgehogs are considered as indicator species, reflecting the health of our environment. Their thriving populations signify a flourishing ecosystem, while a decline can alert us to issues like habitat loss or food shortages. Moreover, as one of the UK's beloved species, hedgehogs enhance not only the richness of our wildlife but also uplift our mental well-being, reminding us of the beauty and interconnectedness of nature.

Steps to get it done

  • Raise awareness about the declining population of hedgehogs during a hedgehog event.
  • Connect with the local community to implement at least one action for hedgehog conservation.
  • Assist in creating hedgehog holes and establishing atleast one hedgehog highway.
