Creating healthy people, a healthy economy, a healthy environment and healthy organisations
Whoop, 30 people have pledged since fundraising began!
By West Mercia Search and Rescue
To fund the costs of the external training we need to undertake in order to stay operational, and enhance the skills of current members to deliver internal training to save costs.
We are a totally volunteer charity that trains and equips a search and rescue team to support the emergency services in finding and recovering vulnerable missing people. A large portion of our training uses the skills of members. We also have to look outside for a range of nationally recognised qualifications to satisfy our membership of Lowland Rescue and to remain qualified for major flooding incidents. We have to use recommended external suppliers for these courses and we have to carry the cost. Team members will develop new skills, it will be an investment in their personal growth. This funding will also train new members to serve our community. An enhanced team will mean we can respond more efficiently to our call-outs and be available to more vulnerable people who may need our services. Our aim for 2024 is to grow our team from 70 to 100 operational members to enable greater availability of qualified volunteers for search and rescue in our area.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Our effect is widespread beyond the vulnerable people we search for, and involves bringing closure to families, addressing mental health issues that might arise and supporting the wider family and friends of missing persons. To give some idea of the scale of operation: During 2024 we had 71 callouts, involving over 6000 person hours. Our education programme through our "Home & Dry" on-line water safety course, has been taken by over 22,500 people. Each year we operate River Safety Patrols on the banks of the Severn in Shrewsbury. 1. We would expect to see an increase in numbers of qualified team members available for callouts. 2. There will be a reduction in the demands on team members to fundraise alongside their already demanding training and callout duties. We will be able to invest time in more educational projects within the community. 3. With training costs secured we will be able to focus on raising the money required to keep our assets, vehicles and equipment up to date.
Steps to get it done:
Support with our funding is essential to the development of the team and the level of service we can offer to the local Police and our neighbourhoods. This support comes in many forms, from the public, from individuals and from businesses and we are now looking to our local authorities to help us help their communities and the vulnerable within them. We are committed to developing our standards and providing a nationally qualified and recognised service to the people of Shropshire.
