The idea
The aim of the project is to offer meaningful learning opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and support them to either obtain paid employment, use their newly acquired skills for the benefit of the local community or life skills. learning will be in the catering and hospitality environment following a person-centered plan. During the sessions individuals will gain knowledge in food hygiene, health and safety, customer service and employability. As the sessions are bespoke, we plan for 3 or 4 trainees per day. We plan sessions weekly and theme them. We plan a work experience and a ‘pop up’ café week so trainees can serve customer and gain experience in customer service. Trainees will choose a lunch for the day, plan, shop, make and eat on site. we look at budgeting, numeracy and literacy skills. We have access to an allotment where we look at food to table experience. Accessing the local community is important, road safety skills, safety in the community.
What we'll deliver
- Life skills
- Community engagement
- Opportunities for adults with a learning disability
Why it's a great idea
The project runs from a cafe in the community but we would like to move it to our own site. we need 3 garages converted to a workable kitchen. This would lesson our overheads and give us the opportunity to work closer with the local residents, opening it up for external use. We have found that once an individual reaches the end of college those with a learning disability have very limited opportunities. we would like our project to help them experience the catering and hospitality environment and gain valuable life skills. We offer the chance to learn about food to table, growing foods from seed and sharing with the local community, offering work experience and helping others.
Steps to get it done
- Our plan is to provide training for adults with a learning disability/autism.
- Bring the community together
- Contributing to a better environment
- Supporting the local economy
We would like to move our project to an onsite garage. This will save us on overheads and give us more scope to bring the community together. the garage needs a full conversion into a working kitchen. This will enable us to provide the high standard of opportunity for our clients and enhance their learning skills.
