Grove Park Bug Palace

Osprey Outdoors are teaming up with Friends of Grove Park to create a Bug Palace in a fenced area around a park pond. This is first stage in establishing a mini nature reserve promoting biodiversity.

The environment

The environment

The "Independant Sovereign Nation of Bugtopia" has increased the number of species of birds in the Park, never recorded before: Kestral, Goldfinch, Bearded Tit, Garden warblers, Jay, Heron. Bats are now frequetly observed above the pond. G Great Tits and Blue Tits have started collecting nesting material put out for them 500-1200 species of invertebrate use the structure. The head of the dragon is a living willow structure. There's a toad hibernating in the area. Hedgehogs have been re-introduced to the park, and have been seen since, so have taken up residence. Increased activity amongst the badgers - the set has increased in size. Bee and butterfly populations have increased, Brimstone butterflies hibernating overwinter. Mason Bees taken up residence. At least two other Bug hotels have been inspired and built by the team in WsM quarry and Prince Consort Gardens. With 7 bug hotels waiting to be constructed.

The local economy

The local economy

Lots of recycled material was used and prevented it going to landfill. From newspaper articles increased footfall has brought in trade to nearby businesses. Replicas of the local business that have supported the project were filled with materials and added to the city. This promotes their businesses. Avon Wildlife Trust have started an Environmental and Ecology level 3 course one day a week in the park.

Many children were engaged in creating Bug Hotel, there are regular volunteering groups who assist Friends of Grove Park every Thursday. Adults with Learning difficulties from Burley Inclusive are now volunteering in the park and Play Wild a pre-school children's group created their own corner.

The new bug hotels are different shapes - a lighthouse, a cone shape. Bug Hotel internet site is being created which will show the locations of the local bug hotels.
