The environment

The environment

The local green space we access in Haltwhistle is a public one; our use of the site, including litter picking, removal of dog waste and adding some seating, has encouraged others to take care of this community asset. Local families have continued to use the site outside of sessions, showing that they appreciate and enjoy time in this valuable outdoor space. Our families also participated in some tree planting on site, encouraging responsibility for future users of the site and consideration of the environmental value of trees to wildlife and humans. We talk about the Three Look Afters at forest school, and one of those is Look After Nature; our sessions always highlight the importance of nature, to flora and fauna itself, but also to positive mental health for participants.

The local economy

The local economy

Our project has created a job for a local person, with training to become qualified, and opportunities to progress within our organisation. This local person will then spend their earnings in the local economy. We have also encouraged participants from villages beyond Haltwhistle to visit and spend money in local cafes, shops etc.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

We have funded training for a local person, which has enabled them to obtain paid work with our organisation. We are in the process of recruiting another volunteer.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

Forest school is all about being active in the outdoors, showing communities what they can access for free on the doorstep. A session of forest school involves up to twice as much physical activity than a average school PE session. Our project has shown families what is available on their doorstep within walking distance, showing that they can get outdoors, be active and have fun together at no cost during a time of increased living expenses.
