By NEW CUTURAL FOUNDATION AND IDEAS
Event that will provide a free evening of Gambian culture, food, music and entertainment with a focus on reducing isolation and addressing mental health issues.
Doncaster has a varied African population, many of whom are socially and personally isolated. Our idea is to have a number of evenings where members of our Pan-African communities are able to present aspects their national culture to Doncaster residents, some with an African background but many who have no experience of it whatsoever. The evenings will be held at a town centre location and will be free and open to all. There will be food, music and conversation, as well as discussions around mental health and social isolation, subjects which are not always out in the open in African communities. The event will also be a hugely valuable exercise in gathering together Doncaster residents of African origin, creating a Pan-African network who will then take forward evenings of their own. Doncaster Council are fully supportive of the group, and have been instrumental in helping us put this project together. Demand is high for the event, and we expect it to be attended to capacity.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Society is fragmented, and people with a non-British background are often isolated, either by choice or because of necessity. We want to share our culture with others, a. to create some common ground, b. to improve awareness and understanding and c. to discuss the things that we all have in common but might not admit to ourselves. We also want to make friends, and have a good time.
