In conjunction with artists, creative technologists and arts companies, a range of researchers and scientists from Lancaster University, Explore will reveal fascinating insights and learning about light, art and science. The week will feed directly into Light Up Lancaster itself with the learning – and some development projects – pivotal to how artworks at the festival are created and the rationale for the theme of the 2024 renewal being The Art of Science. Explore will be based in The Storey, Lancaster and will have a comprehensive schedule of FREE enriching, lively, hands-on activities combining arts and science during half-term, October 21st to October 25. The project will provide an opportunity for self-expression and exploration, helping participants to understand the wider world around them.

What we'll deliver:

  • FREE creative workshops and activities for young people
  • A comprehensive, week-long, varied programme under one roof
  • Artist, creative technologists and scientists lead hands-on activities

Why it's a great idea:

We believe that participation in structured, high quality creative activity can change peoples’ lives for the better. The project will provide an opportunity for self-expression and exploration, helping participants to understand the wider world around them. The workshops and activities will be a two-way exchange between artists delivering and the participants, feeding both with creative ideas and sparking new learning and skills development. It will be inspiring, motivating and rewarding. Some of the participants will also be helping to create a beautiful piece of work with a ‘wow’ factor for Light Up Lancaster itself and they will take a great deal of pride in their achievements.

Steps to get it done:

  • Booking all the artists, academics and creative technologists to deliver the project
  • Creating a comprehensive, confirmed schedule for the week

Explore will be a new, key component of Light Up Lancaster (attended by 72,000 people in 2023) as it will be umbilically linked to the festival itself.
