The local economy

The local economy

The project not only provided paid roles for all invited artists, workshop leaders, and organisers, but also created exciting opportunities for sellers to engage with new, diverse audiences through the market. During the festival weekend, visitors from across the region flocked to the event, naturally boosting foot traffic and spending at local businesses, providing a tangible economic uplift to the area. People continue to see the work at various other events that happen on the land and regular sessions hosted by Wild Roots Community Garden. Furthermore, numerous new paid opportunities have already emerged for a variety of artists—and continue to unfold, encouraging growth within the creative community.

Arts, culture & heritage

ELEMENTS celebrated and elevated the vibrant street art culture of Newcastle and the Ouseburn Valley, serving as a dynamic platform to advance arts, culture, and heritage in multiple impactful ways: 1) Championing Artistic Growth: The festival directly supported local street artists by providing paid opportunities and prominent platforms to showcase their work, contributing to their professional development and sustainability. Aspiring artists were offered opportunities to explore and develop their craft through workshops and outreach activities, creating pathways into the arts for emerging talent. 2) Community Engagement: Through accessible community workshops, ELEMENTS introduced street art as a medium for creative expression. These sessions not only brought art to new audiences but also developed a deeper sense of local pride. By involving the community in both the creation and interpretation of artworks, the festival strengthened connections between people and their local heritage. 3) Preserving and Showcasing Heritage: With ‘sense of place’ as a core theme, various artworks and workshops were inspired by the area’s heritage, culture, and stories. This approach ensured the festival celebrated the region’s unique identity, preserving its history while reimagining it through a contemporary lens. 4) Consolidating Local Culture: Newcastle’s reputation as a hub for street art was further reinforced, consolidating its position in the cultural landscape. The Ouseburn Valley, already known for its creativity in this area, gained greater recognition as a vibrant cultural destination. 5) Accessibility and Inclusivity: Street art served as an accessible and widely appreciated medium, making the festival inclusive and engaging for people from all walks of life. Summary: Overall, ELEMENTS contributed to the rich cultural fabric and heritage of the area by amplifying local voices, celebrating historical narratives, and nurturing a thriving artistic ecosystem that connects the past, present, and future. The festival not only supported artists but also empowered the community, creating a legacy of creativity and cultural pride.
