Bringing together creativity & community in the heart of the Ouseburn. Engaging surrounding communities, creating opportunities and showcasing NE talent in Newcastle's first street art festival.
ELEMENTS will be a high profile showcase of public street art embedded at a local level. Injecting life into a patch of land in the Ouseburn - Newcastle’s art quarter - the festival will provide opportunity for huge wall murals creating a spectacular, free, public gallery. Using core themes of celebrating local creativity & sense of place, ELEMENTS will also feature public facing, community aimed workshops & activities leading to the large-scale showcase of street art accompanied by a host of exciting offers. Expect hands on activities, demonstrations, markets, live music & refreshments. ELEMENTS is being led by local artist Mark One87 and Building Culture, with support from Project North East. Our collaborative approach sees us working with and supported by a host of local organisations, artists and community groups to create a high impact, colourful and energetic event, with year round legacy. We can't wait to bring you Newcastle's first street art festival.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Calling on its rich heritage as Newcastle’s cultural quarter ELEMENTS will bring together local artists, community groups, businesses and visitors in the Ouseburn through the NE’s first public street art festival. > Artists will benefit from being part of a high impact, North East showcase, and future artists will find inspiration. > Community groups will be engaged in workshops and activities, providing skills, opportunities and relationships as well as routes into the arts. > Locals, visitors and businesses alike will benefit from a dynamic injection of public artwork, through this spectacular ‘open air gallery’ a new destination will emerge. > People will find platforms and opportunities to help inform the site longer term and to join the wider conversation about the Ouseburn Valley > All of this will bring people together, building upon a sense of place, pride and ownership encouraging people to celebrate the areas in which they live, work and play.
Steps to get it done:
We're actively working with the various surrounding communities and artists to inform the event. This deeper, more embedded approach seeks to include voices not usually heard through these processes, creating more meaningful engagement and community involvement. We're making sure our project complements existing work in the area: the art market, the community garden, The Ouseburn Festival are just a few examples and already emergent opportunities are presenting themselves for crossover and support. Growing support and crossover already includes: Wild Roots Community Garden, Northern Print, The Ouseburn Trust, The Ouseburn Market, Shielfield Youth Programme with more conversations happening each day. We have a strong evidence base for community outreach work within the field of street art and graffiti via project artist Mark One87. Many examples document positive outcomes in the areas of empowerment, civic pride, wellbeing, cultural exchange and boosts to the local economy.

It's been a little while since Elements took place and we'd like to invite you all down to the site for an open day. We have had a lot of enquiries about access to the site, so if you would like to see the finished work or take some photos, we want to give people the chance to have a look around. The site will be open so you can see the completed works unobstructed, if you didn't get a chance to attend the festival, this is your chance. We will be inviting the artists to attend as well. The Elements open day will take place on Sunday 22nd September from 12pm - 2pm. It's free to attend, no booking necessary and all are welcome. See you then ✌️ >> Sunday 22nd September, 12pm - 2pm >> Woods Pottery, off Stepney Bank, (behind Northern Print), Ouseburn, NE1 2NP
It's been two weeks since we delivered the first ELEMENTS: Street Art Festival and what an amazing weekend it was - full of creativity, colour and all round good vibes. We would like to give a massive thanks to everyone who played their part in the festival. From our sponsors and backers to the artists, sellers visitors and everyone else who contributed - we couldn't have done it without you! If you attended the festival, we'd love to hear what you thought - this short survey will help us to improve future events and help with funding & support as we begin to think about next year. >>> forms.gle/juRqEE3pu1vCW1HC7 Be sure to check our socials as official photography and videos gradually drop in - they are looking incredible! We still have our community projects in motion so the work continues and we will be sharing more on these as well in the coming weeks. BIG thanks 🙏 The ELEMENTS team.
The time has come, the site has been prepped and we're ready for Elements to take place! 18 artists will be painting live from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, plus creative market, food & coffee, DJs providing the tunes and loads of free workshops to get stuck into. Weather is looking nice, too! 😎☀️ Insta: instagram.com/elements_streetartfest Facebook:facebook.com/elements.streetartfest
Only two weeks until ELEMENTS hits Newcastle! It's been all go the past few weeks. Our community projects are in full swing and logistics for the festival weekend are dropping into place nicely. You can see from the video that we have teamed up with Nowt Special to deliver our art market and have our final roster of artists. Keep your eyes on our social media as full list of artists, sellers and workshops will all be announced over the next couple weeks and updates on the amazing community engagement projects will land there, too. As ever, please spread the word far and wide. Thanks, Mark One87, Building Culture and PNE 🙏
It's been a few weeks since we hit our target and it's been all go behind the scenes! Any day now we’ll be promoting the event across all channels, please keep an eye out for that and share far and wide. We are deep in preparation now for the main event and our community projects are getting started. We had our first workshop with the Ouseburn Trust last week, working members of the community to plan our collaboration piece for the Ouseburn festival. This HUGE wall mural will happen on the front of the Trust's new building in Lime St during the Ouseburn Festival - it's a lovely example of crossover and will serve as a warm up of things to come at the ELEMENTS festival a few weeks later. Come and say hello on July 13th & 14th. Last night we also had our first session with Foundation Futures, working with their Byker Real group. Through this project, we are working with a group of young people who are residents in the Byker wall, to engage them in a graffiti art project and channel some energy… there may be a minibus involved! Finally, we’ve been making more and more connections and have some exciting announcements to make soon… the image on the left may give you a hint ;) Thanks everyone, as ever please keep an eye on our socials for more regular updates: > Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/elements.streetartfest > Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elements_streetartfest/ The ELEMENTS team
