An arts, crafts and play offering to children 0-10 years old and their parents with a focus on being eco friendly, getting back in touch with nature, buying less materials & finding joy in handmade
The vision is to offer 6 indoor sessions and 6 outdoor sessions, total of 12 for the year. Arts, Crafts & Play sessions accross the borough of Barnet to children 0-10years old & their parents. The sessions will create a sense of community & bring a focus on looking after our planet. Each session will have its own story & theme, i.e. "make your own toy, costume, birthday decorations" using materials at our disposal, upcycling household items that would otherwise go to waste. The monthly 'Earth Play' session will be held outdoors, accross all of Barnet's beautiful green spaces. Children & parents can take part in activities that get them closer to nature. An adventure type or Mindful type of session. Normally these sessions are quite costly and far and few available. Indoor sessions will be accross the community in halls, to reach a wider patch. The well thought & prepared sessions will be fun & interactive but also offers sustainable options to do more with less.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Parents and children will feel part of the Barnet community & want to take part in eco-friendly leisure and arts activities with their children. The aim is to encourage them to buy less toys, less plastic and waste less. Instead we will take advantage of the benefits of being close to nature, using our hands to make things, crafts from materials we will upcycle, whilst creating a social space for everyone to get to know other parents and children. It boosts mental well being, social skills and promotes a more sustainable way to raise our children. Hopefully this will help parents to have a place to bring their children that is not costly. The project in the longer term will have a good network of involved parents and children and through a feedback mechanism the sessions will increase and improve. Hopefully offering volunteer positions & a wider reach accross Barnet.
Steps to get it done:
Most of the materials I will be using will be "good rubbish", for example empty egg boxes, cardboard boxes, kitchen roll tubes and any other rubbish that can be upcycled before it ends up in the bin. As the sessions expand I will also be getting donations of "good rubbish" from local businesses and schools. The other materials will be sourced second hand, and where necessary purchased from an eco-friendly provider. I will also make home made glue. Aiming to reduce the need to buy more (harmful or expensive) materials for the sessions. Any items I purchase will be second hand, like children's craft aprons. The aim is to spend as little of the money on one-time use materials and instead use it to promote the sessions, buy more permanent items as necessary and put more towards making the sessions accessible to all. For any hiring costs of affordable halls in Barnet for any indoor sessions required.
