Eynsham Allotments have over 200 allotmenteers of all shapes and sizes, ages and backgrounds and from all walks of life. Some are more able than others but all love being outside growing fruit, flowers and super veggies for their own health and wellbeing. Some plot holders come from over a mile and sooner or later all need to go to the loo! We have no toilet facilities on site so we want to install a fully accessible composting toilet. We also want to regenerate our woodland area, planting more species of trees and shrubs, encouraging more bio-diversity with bird boxes, bee boxes, bug hotels and insect habitats. We will be making it safer by removing diseased ash trees from near the paths. We want to make our woodland path accessible for all and create a clearing "classroom" to be used by all age groups in our wider village community for outdoor events and learning in nature.
What we'll deliver:
- A fully accessible Composting Toilet
- A re-planted, safer, sustainable Woodland area.
- Fully accessible paths through the woodland.
- A 'Clearing Classroom' space for all age learning in nature.
- A stand of Willow and Hazel for coppicing
- Planting of communal orchard trees
- Bee boxes, bird boxes and bug hotels
- picnic tables and benches for all ages
Why it's a great idea:
Our 'Call of Nature' project will really bring relief to all plot holders from families with young children to our oldest allotmenteer of 92 - literally! An on-site toilet means we can spend more time growing. With no power or water on-site a composting toilet is both sensible but also will provide the ultimate in recycling! We can also welcome groups from local schools and clubs to events or learning outside in nature in comfort and safety. We need to be fully inclusive and make our whole site accessible for all with solid wheelchair friendly paths and facilities. Our woodland regeneration, and removing diseased ash trees, will keep our land healthy for successive generations of nature lovers and growers too.
We have specifically chosen the KL2 accessible toilet for its great durability and low maintenance and to encourage more plot holders with low mobility.
Steps to get it done:
- Prepare site and arrange installation of the composting toilet.
- Organise remedial tree work and woodland clearing, habitat building
- Lay the accessible pathway and clearing floor
- Purchase bare root species and organize volunteer planting teams
- Plant and protect all trees/ shrubs using volunteer teams
- Install directional signage to make clear for all where features are.
- Plan ongoing maintenance with volunteer work parties.
- Acknowledge all support funds, report back and celebrate!
We have a team of active volunteer plot holders on site on working party days who are keen to install, build, plant, make and create together- so both saving as much cost as possible but also getting together as a community to achieve more and enjoy and improve our environment.
