About the Project Creator
Bridgegate East Residents Association (BERA) is a constituted group whose purpose is to act on behalf of the local community to enhance the enjoyment of living in this area of Chester. The Drill Hall Gardens lies at the heart of this community and has seen a rise in antisocial behaviour and rough sleeping over recent years. In 2024 BERA formed the "Friends of the Drill Hall Gardens" group, with the aim of working together to improve and help look after the space, to create a valued and well used community garden, accessible to all, and giving both residents and visitors alike the opportunity to connect with nature, build an increased sense of community and reduce social isolation. Our vision is to create a green haven in the heart of the city centre, and a space that can be accessed by many different groups within our community. Our hope is that the project will provide local residents the opportunity to take pride in the space, to feel a sense of belonging, and to develop skills and relationships with neighbours in the process, improving wellbeing and access to nature.
