More about our impact
The environment
In keeping with our environmental policy, the purchase of reconditioned devices was important. Regrettably however, the reconditioned laptops we had planned to purchase from a local store were given no warranty; the store would not guarantee longevity or even whether the laptops were fully functioning. We therefore had to purchase new devices. Three laptop cases made from recycled material were purchased but were then stolen. Cutting down the use of paper and ink in favour of digital resources has meant a significant contribution to waste reduction. Having access to online classes via the laptops, students can participate in more classes/learning opportunities without the necessity of travel and its environmental impact.
The local economy
Where possible, the charity purchases resources within the local economy.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The laptops have already made positive changes for those individuals who have been given one. As stated in our forecast, digital access in a catalyst for advancement, principally via access to language learning, other educational or volunteering opportunities, and job-seeking.
Activity, health and leisure
During the course of the charity’s work, many participants have disclosed issues with mental health such as trauma, depression and isolation. For women who may have caring commitments, or limited opportunities for contact with others outside the home, access to the internet and to our online classes can be particularly important. Our women-only conversation group for example, is a social and educational space where discussion is often of a deeply personal nature, and advice and emotional support safely exchanged. In terms of well-being alone, the impact is inestimable.
