Connecting young people after lockdown with professional dance artists for creative, fun, dance opportunities in Hythe, Kent
For over thirty years Instep Dance Company have been welcoming young dancers through our doors. We see them grow in confidence, ability, talent and friendships thrive. We celebrate all abilities and encourage everyone to explore dance in a supportive environment. The pandemic has meant that our young people have not danced together for over a year. This has effected their mental health and put a strain on all parts of their lives. We need your help to run two projects to bring our children and young people back together, to dance and laugh together. This will offer our young dancers the chance to participate in 3 exciting, creative projects to work with professional Dance Artists. They will learn new skills, meet new friends, have the chance to experiment and be creative and to move and get fit and healthy again post lockdown. At the end of each project we will hold a celebratory performance event for their friends and families

Why it's a great idea:
Lockdown has been incredibly hard on children and young people, they have missed seeing their friends, enjoying hobbies and developing their skills. Social isolation has also meant that many young people have found it difficult to stay fit and healthy. This has impacted badly on their mental health. We will enable creativity through fun, experiencing joy through movement and offering them a space to dance together face to face and not through a screen. The Arts have been hit particularly badly and many Artists have had no work for a whole year. This project brings much needed paid work to Dance Artists. By encouraging young people to participate in dance we are supporting the regeneration of the Arts in Kent Taking part in dance activity improves social and physical interaction, problem solving, verbal and non verbal communication and much more

VolunteerInstep has played a major role in the development of community dance work in the Hythe area for over thirty two years. Instep dance company started in 1980, when Jackie Mortimer (founder and Artistic director) saw a demand for an after school dance class for students at Brockhill Park Performing Arts College (then St Leonard's Secondary School for girls) in Hythe, Kent where she was teaching Dance and PE. The classes started with 14 students, some of whom now work at Instep!
We aim to provide an equal opportunity for all to discover, demonstrate and develop their abilities in the field of dance.
Through our activities we aim to offer the community the opportunity to partake in classes that offer disciplined, worthwhile and creative experience. We strive for excellence through our classes, which are taught in a positive working environment.
The focus is always to encourage and celebrate. We have many opportunities to do this through dance – but we also aim for a wider understanding of achievement as we hope to develop both personal and social skills in our young people.
Through classes, workshops and courses we aim to educate all in the philosophy of dance as art, with equal emphasis on the creative process and the product.
Instep was formed to give children leaving the school the opportunity to continue their interest in dance beyond school, and has grown considerably, in response to demand from the local community.
Instep dance Company is Dance Company in residence at Brockhill Park Performing Arts College following work to establish a partnership agreement between the two parties.
In 40 years Instep has formed a reputation of being one of the best youth dance companies in the Country having enjoyed considerable success with over 50 students going on to study dance at Universities and conservatories and many going on to establish careers in dance ranging from teaching to performance.
Currently, six dance departments in our regional schools are either being led by or include ex Insteppers , (Folkestone School for Girls, Homewood, Brockhill, Highworth Grammar and Mascalls School)
Past members are also currently dancing with the Ballet Boyz , Verve Dance Company, Lila Dance , Morvell Dance and National Youth Dance Company .
Project Owner: InStep The Project Owner takes legal responsibility for receiving and spending the funds raised and ensuring the project is delivered.
Contractor: Lila Dance The team responsible for building or installing the project.
