The idea
Situated behind St Martins Church Sutton Road Walsall, we aim to change an overgrown plot of land into a vibrant eco-friendly garden; fostering a sense of community pride and neighbourhood involvement in the development and ongoing creation and maintenance of the garden. Also helping to develop new friendships and promote improvement in mental health and wellbeing it will be a series of small gardens. These will include: - flower and shrubs quiet area, growing space with raised beds for individual and communal activity, wildlife and bee friendly space and a tactile and sensory area It will include an open area for community events and workshops creating an environment which will benefit the whole community. We already have 6 small allotments, 5 active beehives and a small orchard.
The first stage of the gardens development is to be a quiet and reflective space where we now need to install a safe and robust pathway which can be accessed by everyone.
What we'll deliver
- Install tarmac pathways with sleeper edging.
- Provide safe access for everyone including wheelchair users
Why it's a great idea
We want to promote, maintain and help to improve the health and wellbeing of our local community and encourage people to engage in their natural environment. Parks and green spaces are proven to help people stay physically and mentally well. Daffodils Community Garden and Allotments will be a place where the local diverse neighbourhood can meet, work, socialise and relax together. It will be an important tool to drive social cohesion, combat loneliness and build community spirit.
Steps to get it done
- Provide wide and safe pathways accessible to everyone including wheelchair users
- Continue to plant and prepare borders. Our theme for this area will be Country Garden.
- Gradually replace central grassed area with plants, this may become a memorial rose garden.
Phase one of the garden is under construction and safe access by providing new pathways is necessary before the garden can be fully opened. However, on a different part of the site ,with seperate entrance we do have 6 small allotments and 5 active beehives. Brownie Guides and "The Good Spud Company" manage seperate small plots.
We are grateful for the help provided by volunteers from local businesses who have worked hard helping us to clear the site and prepare the ground ready for the pathways to be installed on the first stage of the garden. Saturday morning volunteers from the local community offer regular help doing a wide variety of jobs across the site and are invaluable in the gardens development.
