The local economy

The local economy

The "COVID-19 & Beyond" exhibition, curated by the Photojournalism Hub, serves as a social and economic catalyst within the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. Presented through a physical showcases at the Sands End Arts & Community Centre, a dedicated research-led online journal, and and online Journal on the Photojournalism Hub website, the project ensures that the lived experiences of marginalised communities remain a permanent part of the historical record. By securing over £9,000 in community-led crowdfunding, the initiative directly stimulated the local economy by funding community-run venues and providing professional photography training and accreditation to local youth, enhancing their long-term employability. Beyond its archival value, the project bolstered the "social enterprise" ecosystem by driving footfall to local Fulham businesses and activating public spaces as hubs for civic engagement. By focusing on the structural inequalities exacerbated by the pandemic, the exhibition transitioned from a simple photography display into a community wealth-building tool. It turned cultural participation into a tangible economic benefit by supporting local supply chains, providing platforms for freelancers, and aligning with the borough's broader strategy to foster a resilient, arts-driven local economy.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

The project served as a vital engine for professional and academic growth by directly integrating workforce development into the creative process. The exhibition enabled a group of local young people currently participant of 'Lens on a Century' project with the Photojournalism Hub, to fulfill the "Active Audience" requirements of their Arts Award qualifications. Beyond accredited education, the initiative prioritised economic empowerment by providing paid employment for young people in technical installation and gallery invigilation, while simultaneously accelerating the freelance careers of participating photographers through high-profile media exposure and publication. This commitment to mentorship extended to leadership roles, where an open call policy for an assistant curator provided emerging professionals with essential, high-level practical experience in managing a socially sensitive exhibition.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

The "COVID-19 & Beyond" project has made a significant impact on arts, culture, and heritage by transforming a global health crisis into a documented cultural legacy. It moved beyond the traditional "news cycle" to create a permanent, artistic record of the pandemic's social consequences.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

The "COVID-19 & Beyond" exhibition promoted community well-being and active engagement by transforming the pandemic narrative from one of isolation into a collective, creative experience. Through the exhibition, collaborative public workshops and events, the project encouraged physical and social activity and provided a vital space for public reflection and social rapport. The initiative supported mental health by offering a platform for the bereaved and marginalised to process trauma through storytelling, while also fostering leisure and education for local youth through the Arts Award qualification and paid roles in gallery invigilation.
