After a successful month-long trial, we want to extend the offering to provide a 12-month boxing course for our local veterans.
In July, we offered a free 1-month trial to the local veterans' group. During this time, veterans had the opportunity to work on their boxing skills alongside experienced, qualified coaches and modern equipment while enjoying the camaraderie of being together in the gym environment. The initiative was a great success, with the veterans undergoing rigorous training in technique and cardio work. This tested them mentally and physically, giving them a taste of the challenges they faced while serving. We are now seeking funding for a 12-month program to sustain our support for our local veterans and build on the progress we have made. The program aims to improve the veteran's boxing skills whilst creating a sense of belonging and community. We want to create an environment where they can meet like-minded people, learn vital life skills, and feel valued. This is our way of showing appreciation for their service and supporting them in their transition to civilian life.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Veterans face a high risk of homelessness and mental health challenges when they transition into civilian life. Boxing can offer them a sense of purpose through familiar training routines while also providing networking opportunities. Our goal is to use boxing as part of a comprehensive approach to supporting veterans' well-being as they navigate the challenging transition from military to civilian life, which often involves struggling with a sense of identity. Veterans come from an environment where they are told when to eat and sleep and often struggle with the adjustment. Boxing is quite regimented in its steps and movements; having to be in the right place at the right time. Punching a bag can also help release tension after a week of life stresses. Striking a heavy bag is not only an excellent calorie-burner and musculoskeletal exercise, but it can also be highly cathartic. This is an opportunity for the club to open our doors to our local veterans and give something back.
Steps to get it done:
As a not-for-profit organisation, the club is entirely run by volunteers. Everyone is welcome, regardless of gender or age. We have an open-door policy, meaning everyone can enjoy a safe space to keep fit and learn the art of boxing at the training sessions held every weekday evening and Saturday mornings. We believe that by providing this program for our veterans in a safe and supportive environment, we can help the veteran community adapt to their new lives. This would reduce the burden on already overstretched mental health and rehabilitation services in the borough while helping individuals develop the skills and confidence they need to adjust to their new lives. The project will provide veterans with a safe and familiar place, at the same time giving them a sense of purpose and routine. Our organisation is a well-known community hub with a reputation for implementing positive interventions. With your help, we can make our latest project a reality.
