Installation of secure cycle storage at the Church Stretton Railway Station.

Stretton Climate Care, Church Stretton Town Council, Transport for Wales and Shropshire Council all have strategic polities for Active Travel. The objective is to encourage the shift from car to public transport. By providing instant access to a secure parking space, local residents and tourists can plan to cycle to the station to travel onwards by train. The lockers will be part of a whole network of secure parking spaces on demand and 24/7, for use by cyclists at railway and bus stations, shopping centres, and other centres.

Why it's a great idea:
At present there are three Sheffield stands at the station for cyclists to secure a cycle with their own locking device. A more secure facility at the railway station will make a ‘cycle plus rail’ journey a feasible alternative to travelling by car. The facility will relieve demand for car parking at the station, and reduce the local road traffic. The facility will also provide secure cycle storage for local residents and visitors who wish to spend time in the town centre.

Church Stretton is a small market town in the heart of the South Shropshire hills near the English/ Welsh border, an area known as The Marches. A thriving tourist town, surrounded by spectacular landscapes and scenery with an extensive range of outdoor activities on offer. Easily accessible by rail from north, south, east and west.

We are delighted to let you know that the Church Stretton secure cycle hangars (official name for the lockers) has reached its fundraising target! We will continue to collect pledges as a contingency, and to put towards the purchase of a third cycle hangar for the town - something social media tells us local residents want to have.

VolunteerLorna Taylor, a Trustee of Stretton Climate Care, is passionate about active travel. Cycle touring in the Pyrenees didn't quite prepare her for the sharp Shropshire hills, but she has enjoyed many days out locally, with the mandatory cafe or pub stop en route. Recent travel across Europe has been by rail, and it is a joy to see how extensively cycling is embraced in cities and out in the countryside, with excellent facilities for cyclists. Lorna is keen to make it more possible for local residents to enjoy similar facilities here in the Strettons. Integrated cycle and rail transport is an important step.
