Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach which includes photography, collage, printmaking and performance, I have undertaken numerous projects which place an emphasis upon conversation, storytelling and participation. As the mother of a man who has suffered from enduring mental illness for almost three decades, I have until recently been silenced through fear of the stigma and societal judgement still attached to such issues. This silence has led to years of isolation, and a sense of disconnection from others which has impacted my own mental health.

Art can help us make sense of our experience. It has the power to heal and reveal, to connect us together and give us a voice. The Project will create connections and acknowledge this largely hidden community of people.

Lack of services for those with enduring mental illness can result in long periods of hospitalisation, homelessness, incarceration, early death or suicide.

I am keen to add this new, interpersonal aspect to what will be my most important work to date.

South east Artists (SEAS) is a long established arts organisation, and I have been an active member for 6 years. I was until recently a member of the Core Group, with specific responsibilty for organising external speakers, and arranging informal gatherings in order to share good practise. This role was ideally suited to my skills and the importance I have always placed on inclusivity. Whilst I am no longer a member of the Core Group, I continue to arrange speakers and gatherings, but without the commitment of regular meetings. SEAS (the Project Owner) is a fully constituted group, and is made up of more than 100 artists who work across a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, ceramics and stained glass. I have developed strong relationships within the group providing individual mentoring and practical workshops. There are six SEAS members with whom I have worked closely, and who have their own experience of mental ill health. They will voluntarily bring their skills and ideas to help facilitate each of the Storytelling Workshops being proposed.
