We are in a climate emergency. We need to rapidly decarbonize our economy and society. Liverpool City Council wants the city to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. The challenge is not just technical and financial. The rate and scale of change needed is without precedent. People must have a good understanding of why we need to get to net zero and how. The most significant challenge is finding a way of effectively working with citizens and communities, raising their levels of knowledge and understanding of why these changes need to be made and what needs to be done. Zero carbon Liverpool will work in partnership with 9 community businesses/socially trading organisations and community anchor organisations across Liverpool to increase their awareness and understanding of the climate emergency by delivering 12 carbon literacy courses to staff, volunteers and their wider community of place and interest.

What we'll deliver:

  • 20 carbon literacy course
  • 200 people trained

Why it's a great idea:

Carbon literacy is “An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.” We will facilitate participants through the process to be certified as carbon literate. This will increase the level of understanding and capacity of community anchor organisations such as the Rotunda, The Kuumba Imani, Squash, Kitty’s Launderette and Kindred LCR to take action on climate change. This will create climate champions in their organisations and communities. They will understand of the seriousness of the situation and know what can be done as individuals, community organisations, as neighbourhood and at the city level to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon literacy training will help people move from being passive, reluctant or even resistant to the changes needed to get to net-zero, to informed, engaged and active participants in the net-zero transition.

Steps to get it done:

  • Delivering 20 courses
  • Agreeing dates for 20 courses
  • promoting 20 courses
  • recruiting people to attend 20 courses
  • issuing certificates to attendees who passed the evaluation

Kitty’s Launderette, The Rotunda, The Kuumba Imani, Metal, Squash, Homebaked, Kindred LCR and the Fabric District CiC have confirme they will host and support delivery of at least one carbon literacy course. Zero Carbon Liverpool City Region Ltd.’s wants to work with all sectors, organisations and people to ensure that Liverpool City Region reduces its Green House Gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and reaches net-zero by 2040. Our approach is a place-based response to the challenge of the zero-carbon transition. Rooted in neighbourhoods and working with the diverse communities who live there. We want to enable local democratic control of that transition in a way that captures as many co-benefits for the people as possible. We want to build a collaborative partnership between the third sector, academia, local government, trade unions, cultural sector and business to bridge the gap between the strategic plans and grassroots action.
