Community Orchard at Captains Garden

We are officially welcoming our first batch of 36 trees to the Captain's Garden with a special Wassailing event which will start promptly at 11am - with singing, jinx and toasts to our new trees which you very kindly funded. Hope you can join us

We have planted our first Batch of 35 trees this week ! Our trees are coming in two more batches - one in May 2022 for 18 trees for the two apple and pear 'Victorian Step-over' and the main batch of 70 trees coming in Dec 2022. All the trees are being grown specially for us by Grow Brogdale based at the national fruit collection. We hope to able to let you know soon of our open days soon so you can come to see what you have funded. Many thanks for your support from the volunteers at the Captains Garden.

Just a quick xmas update on our plans for the orchard at the Captain's Garden @ Deal Castle. We been very lucky to have been working with Brogdale, the home of the national fruit collection, to design the orchard and pick for us interesting varieties which will thrive at the garden. They have selected some 65 different varieties for us with lovely names like Chorister Boy, Laxton’s Fortune, Marjorie’s Seedling Plum and Neville Copeman just to name a few. The trees will be specially grafted & grown for us by Brogdale which great part of the story. We will be planting the first 35 trees in January, then in the spring we are building a Victorian stepover with 16 apples and pears and the remaining 69 trees will be delivered in December 2022 - in total there will be at least 120 trees. We will be doing another post in January on our public planting day which people can get involved with. Thank you again for your support in making this all happen in 2021 (+2022)

Iam very glad to report that with 85 backers we have exceed our target - so we will be able to start planting the orchard this winter. Thank you so much for making this happen We are working hard to complete our plans but we think we will start planting in December. We will let people know when things are going happen and the idea is to have at least a couple of public plantings The Crowdfunding runs until next Tuesday 31/8 - Spacehive will then action your pledge (i.e. take the money) so you can expect the money you pledged will be coming out of your account in the first ten days in September.
