The idea
Through local consultation, we intend to shape and improve our current services/short breaks. 80% of 500 families, in just over 1 month, have already told us they find holidays are often in-accessible.
We hope build fully accessible butterfly holiday lodges & a wellbeing complex, offering valuable respite & catering for individuals/families with a variety of needs.
If given final permission, this holiday lodge complex, will be the first of its kind in the North East and nationally. There will be six 3 bedroomed lodges and two 2 bedroomed - all fully accessible with wet rooms, hoists and specialised equipment as standard, with a home from home feel, for a comfortable stay.
The complex will offer onsite care support, additional leisure/ community services also (such as yoga, fitness and employment programmes), to promote well- being. Our future plans include a hydrotherapy pool, a café and accessible play park, with family events to encourage community engagement.
What we'll deliver
- Planning Permission for the Butterfly Lodge Complex
- Finalised Designs and Reports for planning authority
- Community Engagement in the build
Why it's a great idea
Our service has a unique insight into the barriers disabled people face when going on holiday and that is a key benefit to tailoring our products and services effectively.
The benefits of this project enables disabled people to stay healthy, feel part of a community and enjoy leisure/wellbeing breaks stress free with their families, by having accessible amenities, care and support as required.
Over 500 families to date have told us they need and want this service. They desire a social, accessible environment to take holidays locally, to have some well needed R&R and improve wellbeing.
With your help, our lodges/complex will meet this community requirement that so deservedly needs to be met.
The complex will be a central hub, where families have access to safe accessible leisure activities/amenities that promotes independence and brings the community together!
We need your help to get our design ideas drawn up and presented for planning permission so we can realise our goal!
Steps to get it done
- Getting scaled designs/reports for planning
- Contractors hired
- Groundworks
- Build on the first lodge
Sunderland is a fantastic city with lots of great places to visit that link people to its local heritage and connect to its local community.
The Butterfly Holiday Lodge of the North Complex will respect the beauty of this site and these beautiful surroundings will play a pivotal role in promoting well being. As research shows being in a 'green' environment and surrounded by nature can improve mental health/happiness. Getting involved in developing this green space will play a key role in the project.
In addition to all the benefits outlined above the project will also:
1. Boost economy and tourism
2. Maintain local heritage site and promote nature/wildlife
3. Create job /volunteer opportunities for able bodied and disabled people i.e. running of a cafe /reception etc.
4. Provide employability advice, for users of the facility, to drive successful job outcomes in the region.
To bring all this to life we just need the build to happen and the rest of the good work will follow!
