The idea

The music and writing communities in Preston are thriving but lack opportunities to showcase talent through paid performances.

Last year, an ‘open mic’ style event was held at Preston Market as part of the Lancs Encounter festival and showcased a dozen local singer/songwriters and poets, each one performing 4 original works for a small fee.

This event highlighted the need for more opportunities for the many talented local musicians/writers seeking exposure, networking opportunities and paid performance work. The fundraising will simply cover the cost of organising and running 4 events on Sunday afternoons through summer & paying the performers.

Professional sound equipment will be provided and the area is served by The Orchard bar and protected from inclement weather by the Victorian Market canopies. Performers will be encouraged to network and share industry tips and knowledge and will receive video clips of their performances for promotional use.

What we'll deliver

  • Four live performance arts events showcasing local singer/songwriters and spoken word artists
  • Promotion and support for the music/writing community in the wider Preston area
  • Free arts and culture events for wider Preston in an accessible, central location

Why it's a great idea

The project will deliver four free to access arts events on what is effectively a public open space. It will make use of the fantastic space that is the covered market with refreshments on hand. The participants will receive a paid opportunity to showcase their talent. This will also provide the music and literary community in Preston an opportunity for many of them to come together, network, share experiences and knowledge of the industry.

Steps to get it done
