We are a charitable Trust pending registration with the charities commission. Our aim is to protect, enhance and preserve Butler’s Wharf Riverside in the interests of all its users. Our steering committee is made up of volunteer residents and businesspeople.
We began in 2017 and work closely with STRA (Shad Thames Residents Association) and STAMP (Shad Thames Area Management Partnership). The reason for the Trust is to campaign for this specific cause, drawing together the complex rights and regulations, involving several resident and business stakeholders, the Port of London Authority, the local authority, Petchey Holdings Ltd and all the jetty users.
In the past 2 years we have campaigned extensively and worked tirelessly to establish who is responsible for the jetty. We aim to work in partnership with the landowner and the local authority to deliver big improvements here, and to work with New London Architecture to deliver a design that takes all this in to account.
We have held public meetings and conducted a questionnaire asking residents, visitors and businesses what they would like to see here. We received over 400 responses and presented these at a public meeting where we drew together the feedback and presented this to New London Architecture to help them frame the design competition.
In order to ensure the competition has the widest appeal to the largest audience we want to conduct it in phases, starting with an open competition, then a shortlist, then a winner. Once the winning design is agreed upon we want to take the idea further with a feasibility study and begin to fundraise to deliver improvements to this important area of public realm.
We want to ensure the competition concludes with viable winning designs, that take ongoing maintenance costs in to account, while at the same time making sure the site contributes to a reduced carbon footprint for the area, with zero carbon lighting and by encouraging people to walk. We also want to ensure the competition takes in to account the need for peace and quiet for residents and the success of local businsses, while ensuring views are protected and the designs are sympathetic to the warehouse aesthetic.
