This project will provide extra play equipment in Avening playpark, specifically a new zip wire for children to share an adventurous, exhilarating experience with friends and family.
This project will replace the old zip wire in Avening playpark which was removed in 2019 on health and safety grounds. Its replacement has been prioritised by the Parish Council due to public support. We intend to instal a new 20 meter, 1-way, steel zip wire complete with launch platform and safety matting within the enclosed playpark area. This will complement the existing climbing frame and swings. Avening is a village of around 450 households, including a high percentage of young families. It has a thriving primary school and playgroup but the playing field is the only outdoor amenity in the area for all ages to enjoy. Many children walk through the field on the way home from school and make use of the playpark. It's also popular with families at weekends and holidays. The previous zip wire was well liked with children and is much missed. We have obtained quotes from play equipment suppliers and subject to funding, plan to undertake work later this year.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project will provide much needed play equipment in the village for children and families to enjoy. The zip wire will encourage children to spend time outside and help them to keep active in a fun way. Children will experience the exhilarating feeling of "gliding" through the air. It will teach them to share with others; to wait their turn and to help one another. This activity is great for releasing energy, building self confidence, learning to take safe risks and encourage new friendships. The zip wire will help support a childs vestibular system by improving their sense of balance and coordination and strength. Improved playpark facilities will incentivise families to visit the playing field, encourage walking and use of outdoor space. More visits will also promote awareness and interest in the separate "Community Orchard Project" looking at trees and wild life within the playing field.
Steps to get it done:
During 2020 we entered the project into the Calor Rural Community Fund and associated crowdfunder campaign. We publicised the crowdfunder in the village magazine, through all village organisations, social media and a mail drop which resulted in an amazing amount of public support (some 186 separate supporters) raising over £3,500. There were many supportive comments received eg: "The zip wire is a fantastic facility for the children in the Avening community as it provides a challenge and great fun". Since then we have received further donations and now seek funding to make up the shortfall to enable the project to proceed.

Avening Parish Council thank all those who supported its Crowdfunder which also succeeded in securing a donation of £2,000 from Cotswold District Council. Residents will know that we successfully installed the new zip wire in the playpark in time for the summer holidays. We also provided some picnic benches and now await the installation of a bank slide and small roundabout to complete the project - hopefully in the next few months.
Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
