Alexandra Palace is a Grade II listed public building, surrounded by 196 acres of historic parkland. First opened in 1873, it is a rare surviving example of a Victorian pleasure palace, with a footprint of 7.5 acres. Known globally as the birthplace of television, today we are a major player in the UK’s cultural landscape. In a normal year we welcome 750,000 people through our doors to enjoy a wide range of exhibitions, concerts, theatre, cinema, events and, of course, the ice rink! We also welcomed well over 3m visits to Alexandra Park, and during lockdown the park was more popular than ever.
The ice rink was opened in 1990 after an extensive restoration of Alexandra Palace following a devastating fire that destroyed much of the building. In 2019 over 250,000 people visited the ice rink, and ice hockey has been an important part of our programme for many years.
Alexandra Palace is owned and managed by a charity and we play an active role in our community. Every £1 we make from our events is put back into the organisation, to support maintenance and repair of the building, our artistic programme, our community activities and the creative learning programme.
The estate is designated Metropolitan Open Land, a Conservation Area, registered Historic Park, a Local Nature Reserve and an Ecologically Valuable Site of Borough Importance Grade I. The site is owned and protected by a statutory charity, created in 1901 by Act of Parliament.
Alexandra Palace is for the benefit of everyone, forever.
