A Welcoming Space for All
Help us make Advance’s Women’s Centre accessible to all women and girls who need support after experiencing trauma through domestic abuse or involvement with the criminal justice system.
About the Project Creator
Advance is a charity led by women for women and girls founded in Hammersmith over 25 years ago and has been supporting women and girls experiencing trauma through domestic abuse or the criminal justice system ever since. Since the 1990’s we have grown and now run 10 women’s centre’s across London and the South East of England, but Hammersmith remains our home and we’re committed to supporting women and girls in the borough through our safe, welcoming centre here.
For women experiencing domestic abuse, the impacts of recent national and international events on women have created even more risk and barriers to support. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Advance have experienced increasing numbers of women and children being referred to our services, making them even more critical than before. The cost-of-living crisis has further exacerbated the problem, prompting a third more women to connect with charities. Worryingly, research indicates that 96% of victim/survivors believe the cost-of-living crisis is worsening their abuse.
In addition, women in contact with the criminal justice system have often experienced some form of abuse, the trauma of which can make rebuilding their life even more challenging. 60% of the women Advance support who have experience of the criminal justice system have also disclosed experience of abuse. Although shocking, we expect the true number to be higher due to the stigma and shame that still surrounds abuse and women’s fear around sharing this, especially if they think it may impact their relationship with their children.
But at Advance, we don’t just see the problem, we see the whole woman and work with her to understand what we can do to help her rebuild her life and regain independence after experiencing trauma. This could be helping her feel safe in her home, supporting her to manage debts, finding secure housing or employment. Or it may be inviting her to weekly art or movement sessions where she can connect with others who have similar experiences and can build friendships and support networks.
Through our woman-centred approach, Advance prevent the cycle of abuse and re-offending, empowering women and girls to achieve their ambitions and build a positive life.
