In this space we will offer daytime workshops for nursery age children, after-school clubs, holiday clubs, daytime/evening classes for adults and free monthly talks with local artists. The Art House will not be just an ad hoc art project. It will be a creative space where we will offer a variety of art classes and workshops all year round. Local artists will come and share their knowledge and people of all ages can take part in activities that they may have never thought of before. Engagement in community arts activities is said to contribute to personal and social development, help people to feel better and healthier and build new skills and knowledge. I hope that the Art House can bring this to the community of Worthing. I am hoping that establishing the Art House in an empty retail unit in the heart of Worthing Centre will encourage passers by to stop and take in the creativity.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
I believe that teachers face a great challenge in schools at the moment. Art is slowly being taken out from the curriculum. Teachers are facing pressure to focus more and more on academic topics rather than the arts. Studies suggest that children are focusing less and less on arts during the primary school years, and that many children give up on art all together at around the age of 11. At a time when mental health issues are on the rise in children and happiness and wellbeing are declining, this loss of touch with art and creative activities could be significant. Given the reported benefits of creativity, meaningful engagement with the arts is more important than ever and that is my inspiration for this project.
