By 261 (Guildford) Squadron - RAFAC
The Flight Simulator is one of the core ways, 261 Air Cadets, put's the air, in Air Cadet. The current equipment is over 7 years old and with the modern software required does not work very well.
We facilitate ground training via this technology it to practically show principles of flight, airmanship, instrumentation, and navigation. When the cadets are fortunate enough to go flying in a real aircraft, they are empowered with knowledge to make the most of the limited time in the air. This is primarily instructed by Volunteer instructors who hold real world flying qualifications and many hours in the cockpit. One of the main topics we use the simulator for is "Top Navigation" where some of the more advanced cadets, learn to navigate in a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) context, relying on landmarks, roads, railways, and visual landscape, to steer the terrain, all while still flying! The squadron was donated a VR Headset which has really helped with this topic, adding a lots of realism, and getting the cadets to get into good habits such as constantly scanning the sky for other aircraft, especially when turning, and getting the real feel of what's like.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
261 (Guildford) Royal Air Force Air Cadets has been in Guildford for over 85 years. We currently have 110 cadets who meet twice a week and the staff volunteer team provide a varied training programme that teaches fundamental life skills such as discipline, teamwork, respect, and good citizenship. The flight simulator provides a unique opportunity for our cadets especially those that do not have a computer at home. This environment can inspire and prepare cadets for a career in flying or simply give someone the confidence to succeed in something new. With the right training environment our cadets can learn a new skill, gain confidence, and be prepared to get the most out of their real flying whether in a glider or powered aircraft. This project bridges the gap between learning the theory of flying and actually climbing into the cockpit to do it for real. By investing in this project you are investing in Guildford youth and the future.
Steps to get it done:
261 Squadron is one of the flagship units in Surrey. Each year the Royal Air Force Air Cadets sets out to find the best Squadron amongst 1000 in the UK. In 2023 the Squadron was awarded the Morris Trophy which is given to the runners up of this competition. We have cadets from all walks of life and our environment provides a safe and disciplined space that keeps everyone occupied in a constructive way. The Royal Air Force Air Cadets aims are: To promote and encourage among young men and women a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force (RAF); To provide training which will be useful in both the Armed Forces and civilian life; To foster a spirit of adventure and to develop the qualities of leadership and good citizenship.
