The idea

Shepherds Bush Market has recently acquired some fabulous shipping containers in the Space called the Old Laundry Yard. This space could potentially be an amazing place to enjoy the Summer with open air pallets, umbrellas and food carts.

We would like to add some fun, colour and culture to the area by creating a space where Young Volunteers and Elders from the Borough can both come together, enjoy some good old fashioned 1960s vibes whilst sharing stories, playing music, doing workshops and exchanging ideas.

What we'll deliver

  • A fully fitted and decorated 1960s Living Room in a Shipping Container.
  • A quirky Vintage Summertime spot to be enjoyed by all.
  • A space for Elders to share Windrush Stories in a familiar setting.
  • A safe space where young people can meet Elders and record their stories.
  • A space where Young People can learn outdoor DIY Skills.
  • A space where young people can develop media and social skills.
  • A place to step back in time and enjoy the Sound of the Sixties.
  • An opportunity to enjoy an Art Installation for people who rarely go to Museums or Galleries.

Why it's a great idea

It's a great opportunity to bring together two generations in one big creative project that benefits the whole community. Revamping one of the unused containers will create a Summertime Sixties haven, a quirky home from home that will trigger memories in the Elders and be fun and educational for the Young people who engage with it.
The exhibition will not be about making money, moreover a space to learn about our history and the Elders around us as well as understand our Identity and role within ur community.

Steps to get it done

  • Write and issue press releases and design and print marketing.
  • De-rust the frontage and clear out the rubbish from the container.
  • Pull out all the nails in the interior walls and skip the rubbish.
  • Plasterboard and skim the Shipping container.
  • Wallpaper and Paint interior of the container.
  • Paint the container floor with floorpaint.
  • Brief and start off the marketing team to publicise the space.
  • Bring in Axminster carpet and ensure it's freshly shampoo'ed.
  • Fit the Fake Fireplace and check electrics.
  • Fit and Test the Video and Audio Tech.
  • Move in all the armchairs, stereogram and other furniture.
  • Fit all the pictures to the walls and fit all Wall signage.
  • Ensure all press releases are sent out.
  • Erect external signage with opening times
  • Take publicity photos and invite Press for Private View.
  • Workshop the volunteers to interview and film the Elders.
  • Thoroughly brief the team of volunteers to ensure shifts covered.
  • Complete the community film for showing at the end.
  • Review the whole event and record feedback for the "Making of" Film,

The Exhibition will be educational as there will be interesting artefacts to be researched and these artefacts can be tangible and audio described which would allow access for the visually impaired.
