More about our impact
The environment
Our touring exhibition recycles and re-uses community furniture that would often be thrown away by collecting, cleaning and featuring it with information about its British design background and Caribbean historical significance.
The local economy
Though we were not able to get into The Old Laundry Yard, we certainly were able to boost the economy in the area by recruiting part time staff for our exhibition and boosting footfall to both the Petit Miracles Entrepreneur Hub and the Shepherds Bush Market where we took over an empty unit. Our exhibition young volunteers got experience engaging with local elders and the Elders were able to spend more time around younger people. This helped them to beat social isolation and trigger memories from back in the day. Having the exhibition in Shepherds Bush Market was especially good for engaging more people in art and getting people to return and get their friends to return as we have several people tell their friends and family about us and send them back to us later that day or that week!
Volunteering, jobs & education
Though we did not gain access to the Old Laundry Yard in the end, we were able to get into two Commercial Hubs in the Borough: Petit Miracles Entrepreneurs Hub on Shepherds Bush Green and Arch 166 in Shepherds Bush Market. We were able to utilise four local volunteers and also hire three unemployed residents to work in the Exhibition. This really brought a buzz to both Venues who noted more activity and interest in their businesses.
Arts, culture & heritage
We helped over three hundred people engage in art who previously would not normally attend an exhibition or art gallery. We filmed several local elders telling their story and highlighted the rich heritage right on our doorstep.
Activity, health and leisure
The activity of building the exhibition in Petit Miracles as well as moving it to Arch 166 in Shepherds Bush Market encouraged Volunteers to get active, keep busy and increased engagement in the exhibition overall.
