More about our impact
The environment
The Arts Barge will bring life and new purpose to a somewhat overlooked and under-used corner of York City centre. It will provide a positive impact on the Tower Gardens because staff and volunteers will care for and improve the area. It will be an example of positive and creative use of a flood-plain - which for most of the time is otherwise just a walk-way. It contributes to sustainability by being easily accessible for cyclists, pedestrians, and by public transport.
The local economy
It will boost the local economy by providing jobs for artists and in cafe and bar service. It will also source locally as much as possible.
Volunteering, jobs & education
Arts Barge will offer many volunteering opportunities, work for freelance artists and jobs. It will also offer work experience placements for school pupils and College and University students, an informal education programme for all ages and mentoring in specialised areas of the arts. We will also offer CPD courses for artists and other professionals who work with vulnerable client groups.
Arts, culture & heritage
The Arts Barge will offer a whole new opportunity for residents and visitors to York to explore a whole range of art making opportunities and performances on re-purposed heritage river barge that used to work on the Ouse. The barge will be moored back on the River she worked in her heyday, and will be the only publicly accessible example of the City's industrial barge heritage.
Activity, health and leisure
The Arts Barge will offer opportunities for people to engage in arts workshops including dance, drama music, singing and visual arts, learn new skills and explore new experiences. Opportunities will be offered to everyone, and some will be specifically targeted for certain client groups such as older adults, pre-school children and parents, people with learning disabilities, people who are off work due to illness such as anxiety or depression. One of the most important things the Arts Barge will do will promote inter-generational social interaction around enjoying arts experiences together.
