We, the students of Clevedon school in North Somerset, have the unique opportunity to purchase two shipping containers and to convert them into a creative library that can be used by the school and community. We have created plans for this space to take on the appearance of a boathouse clad in wood, to embody the theme of journeys, the sea and stories which are at the heart of our seaside town. We have called the project Xenia embodying the Greek Classical code of hospitality and stories.
What we'll deliver:
- Advertising space in our school newsletter received by over 1000 parents
- An honorary plaque on the library
- Poetry workshop with a leading poet
- Complimentary ticket to our opening
- Student written poem 'Xenia'
- Booking of the space for meetings and events upon completion
Why it's a great idea:
With cuts to our library services, it is more important now than ever to provide our school and wider community access to books and reflective spaces to read and get lost in a world of literature and ideas.
The plan is to use this space as a meeting place both during the day for students to help improve their literacy and develop our love of literature at the school, and in the evenings for community groups.
Steps to get it done:
- Purchase 2 x shipping containers our students have already designed and priced up.
- Have ground landscaped and flattened ready for the containers.
- Containers to be delivered and set up.
- Friends of Clevedon and local business to work with students to help turn the containers into a boathouse library space.
- Open evening inviting all supporters and launching the space.
