More about our impact
The environment
WRITE UP was delivered with sustainability in mind. We made intentional choices to minimise waste and reduce the project’s environmental footprint: - Low-waste production: We used minimal printed materials, relying on digital tickets, running orders and communications wherever possible. - Sustainable resources: All décor was created using reusable items such as fabric, vases, lights and props that will be used for future community events. - Local sourcing: Flowers, food and materials were purchased from local suppliers in Hammersmith & Fulham to lower transport impact and support local businesses. - Accessible public transport venue: helping reduce car travel for guests and participants. - No single-use plastics: We avoided disposable cups, plates and cutlery, choosing reusable or recyclable options throughout. - Efficient energy use: The event was held in a venue that already operates on sustainable practices, meaning no additional energy-intensive setup was required. These choices helped us deliver a high-quality cultural event while keeping our ecological impact as low as possible.
The local economy
WRITE UP made a direct and meaningful contribution to the local creative and cultural economy in Hammersmith & Fulham. By using our crowdfunding budget to pay local people for their skills, we ensured the project circulated money back into the community. Our project supported the local economy by: Paying writers for their creative labour, ensuring emerging and established voices were fairly compensated. Employing local creatives, including a DJ, photographer, designer, and other freelance contributors. Paying for a professional host, ensuring skilled cultural workers were recognised and valued. Hiring a local venue and supporting the borough’s infrastructure. Sourcing food, flowers and materials locally, keeping spending within H&F businesses. Offering volunteering and collaboration opportunities, which helped participants build networks for future paid work. By investing directly in creative workers and local providers, WRITE UP strengthened the local cultural ecosystem and demonstrated that grassroots arts events can be economically as well as socially impactful.
