The idea
For the past 20 years, the music programme at Woodgate Resources Centre has supported young musicians from across the city, helping them to hone their skills at a range of instruments. Today, over 100 young musicians from diverse backgrounds in Leicester's inner-city access uniquely affordable and local music tuition.
To celebrate the anniversary of the Music Programme, the Leicester Symphonia is working with the young musicians from the programme to put on an unforgettable concert in February 2021. This will also coincide with the birthday of the programme’s founder, Geoff Forse, who has worked tirelessly in service of the community.
COVID-19 has put major obstacles in the way of this undertaking however, with many players missing out on vital rehearsals due to the lockdown and expenses rising all the time. We are therefore crowdfunding the costs of equipment to take rehearsals online so that we can make sure our young musicians are well-rehearsed for this amazing concert!
What we'll deliver
- Extra weekly rehearsals on and offline to up to 100 young musicians
- Transport to and from the concert venue for up to 100 players
- A digital platform to secure Woodgate's future as an affordable and diverse inner city music programme
Why it's a great idea
The Woodgate Music Programme in the centre of Leicester is hugely valued by the community. Affordable instrumental lessons offer immense benefits to our young people and the concept should be cherished. The young musicians come from all backgrounds and enjoy Woodgate's inclusive environment.
In a recent survey of young musicians, playing at De Montfort Hall was a shared ambition and we hope to realise this dream with the performance next year. It has been tough for youngsters during the lockdown and rehearsing together online is a way they can stay connected over the Winter months!
The project will also increase Woodgate's capacity by offering online lessons to those who may not be able to reach the centre due to e.g. lack of transport. It will enable Covid-safe joint rehearsals and it will make bookings and communications easier for busy families.
Steps to get it done
- September 2020 - call-out for musicians to come and rehearse for the thank you concert
- October 2020 - launch of the digital platform online
- February 21st 2021 - the concert!
Here's what local parent Davina says about the Woodgate Music Centre: "Having violin lessons with Woodgate has made my daughter feel that being a musician is within reach".
This concert will give the everyone involved in Woodgate Music Centre, as well as communities from across Leicester, something to look forward to over the coming months! Let’s show Geoff that the next 20 years of Woodgate's music programme are secure!
