During the Covid crisis, food poverty has become even worse than before. Volunteers in Fosse Ward see this every day. Woodgate Community Food will make donated food available to all in need
We want to create local temporary food bank to support residents of Fosse ward during this difficult time. Many of our local people suffer deprivation and poverty with the ward scoring high on deprivation indices. Covid has only made this worse and we want to work in solidarity to help those who are struggling by providing free supplies of basic food, provide for special diets and nutritionally-balanced food, toiletries and sanitary products, baby supplies and other urgent items which local families may struggle to afford or access. We aim to provide support for those who are referred by other agencies including local schools and community projects as well as anyone who expresses a need for support informally. We aim to provide weekly food / grocery parcels to around 50-60 families per week although this will fluctuate according to need and other provision. We aim to continue for 3 months and reassess in September.

We hope to create community solidarity with our project. We have 40 volunteers keen to help their neighbours. Woodgate Community Food will enable local people to help out by co-ordinating donations, supermarket excess and specially-purchased items and getting these to the people who really need it. We do not have a local food bank in this part of the city despite it being a deprived area.
Steps to get it done:
We will reduce food waste by getting excess stock to those most in need. We will provide volunteering opportunities to local residents. We will improve community cohesion through solidarity and mutual aid

Woodgate Community Food is busier than ever, thanks to your support in the summer. We are now running out of the funds we raised and need more donations to help keep families fed during this second lockdown. Leicester has been hit hard by local lockdowns and so many people are struggling. Thanks to your support, the food bank is able to expand and grow. We have increased our food supply including much more fresh fruit and veg. We are diverting more good quality supermarket excess to feed our families. We are moving to new premises where we can support more people. We are looking at expanding our services to support our families with other things like cooking equipment. We are sharing free food from local residents (garden and allotment excess) and creating recipe sheets for the apple glut! We couldn't have done any of this without you. Thank you!
Whoop, 110 people have pledged since fundraising began!
This afternoon when we were at 82% we decided to go all out on getting enough pledges to hit our target tomorrow. But we did it today, 24 hours early! We are still keeping the crowdfunder open for the timebeing to collect any many pledges as we can, so we can support more people. Please still share and support us. Fosse Mutual Aid is a newly-formed group of volunteers who have come together during the Covid crisis to support our community. We have recruited volunteers and produced leaflets delivered to every house in the ward offering volunteer support for shopping, collecting prescriptions and any other support. We now have 40 registered volunteers and regular volunteer activity supporting the community. We have formed a small subgroup for those interested in setting up Woodgate Community Food and have already got partners willing to donate and support our project.
