The idea

Planting four mature trees to enhance a neglected site in West Finchley to provide a framework for the overall design of this part of the site. The trees will be cherry, field maple, red hazel and hornbeam chosen to complement the existing trees. The trees will also provide visual interest for users and be anchor points for subsequent shrub and wildflower planting as well as some informal seating. Our ultimate aim is to increase the diversity of the flora so that the site supports a wider range of insects, animals, reptiles and amphibians. We have already installed bird and bat boxes on some of the existing trees but there are few trees that provide bird food.
In order for the trees and other subsequent planting to thrive we are also seeking funding for a removable hand pump to access water in an existing well. This part of the site is labelled as an orchard on old maps.

What we'll deliver

  • Plant 4 trees
  • Hand pump to access water in an existing well

Why it's a great idea

The trees will bring bring in bird life in particular. They will also bring visual enhancement and a peaceful place for humans explore and enjoy nature.
Without the pump watering is only possible with watering cans brought from houses but all houses are too far to carry large quantities and water and this part of the site is not accessible by vehicles.

Steps to get it done

  • Pump purchased

Bringing visitors closer to nature.
