The idea
Underneath the tracks at Poplar DLR Station there lies a huge dark void which acts as the entrance to the Station. Although this concourse is quite grim, we believe that it can be transformed into a spectacular art space. SPLASHArts will create a set of mural freezes printed on aluminium panels. We will set up a series of workshop activities with children and their families and with Canary Wharf personnel before using digital technology to bring the ideas together. The subject matter will include an interesting view point on the wild life in the area. Would you believe it there are some very rare examples of wild life found locally? This will provide a pleasant entry point for travellers and a learning experience for local children.
What we'll deliver
- A triptych of three murals, printed onto diamond and installed onto the station wall.
- 20 local art workshops at summer fundays, Art clubs and in local businesses.
- social media publicity
Why it's a great idea
Our project will create a sense of local ownership. The activity of designing and creating the three murals will bring people together and make them realise that it is their station. The murals will brighten up the Station for local people and travellers. As travellers pass through the vast concourse they will be greeted by pleasant and welcoming pictures. The murals and the process of producing them will provide education for local children and adults about the nearby wildlife and its environment.
Steps to get it done
- August - September 6 summer fun days
- October - collect together designs for first panel of triptych
- January 2024 - set up project in local school
- March 2024 - introduce project into two art clubs
- July 2024 - complete two digital designs
The space is currently badly kept and presents a grim entrance to our Station. Our endeavour will encourage proper usage and will ensure the owners will care for the Station.
