The idea
Where The Bees Fly is a new musical written by 18-22 year olds which explores the impact of climate change on future young generations, through a fun time-travel plotline and newly written songs.
In 2023, RicNic aims to stage the first full production of this musical with a completely youth-led production team, cast, crew and band, alongside a series of community arts events exploring nature and the environment. Drawing young people together from Walsall the project will offer
* 8 x 16-19 yr olds the opportunity to train as producers & event managers, running their own community events.
* 20 x 16-22 yr olds the chance to perform principal roles in the show
* 150 x school children the chance to participate in workshops & perform as part of a choir in the performance.
* 90 x school children to take part in activities across their local community
* 300 community members participating in arts activities
All training, participation and workshops will free of charge
What we'll deliver
- 3 performances of a brand new musical with a fully youth led company
- 3 community art days in local green spaces
- 6 schools workshops in local areas
Why it's a great idea
This project will offer free creative engagement opportunities across Walsall for local families to enjoy the arts, appreciate natural green spaces and make a valid contribution to a wider community scheme.
For the young people involved on our production teams it will offer a chance to gain genuine work experience of running events and the opportunity to develop skills project management, which are transferable to other career pathways. These young people will have the chance to gain a Level 2 or 3 qualification through the Arts Award scheme, further adding to their CVs for the future.
Our aim is to continue supporting these young people past this project to enable them to continue running projects in the area, developing an established offer for local young people.
The workshops and training project will be offered free of charge to all ensuring that everyone has a chance to get involved.
Steps to get it done
- 12 young people will be recruited as Young Producers on the project
- 150 Children will participate in arts activities within their school setting
- 25 young people will lead the production of a new musical
- 200 local residents will have the opportunity to participate in Community Art Days
- 300 local residents will see the performances of the new musical
