More about our impact

Volunteering, jobs & education

We have had volunteers from the church community as well as students from Queen Alexandra College doing their work experience placements at our Warm Spaces.

Arts, culture & heritage

We were able to hold a photography exhibition that chronicled places the photographer had lived - in Argentina, Italy and the UK. We were also able to start a Creative Arts & Crafts morning for people to participate in an organised activity, bring their own to work on or just come in to relax. Organised activities for the Creative Wellbeing Arts & Crafts Sessions have been supported by Birmingham Adult Education Service Family Learning and more recently by Birmingham Centre for Arts Therapies (BCAT).

Activity, health and leisure

All of our Warm Spaces promote social interaction and engagement with the community. The Move It or Lose It exercise sessions on Mondays have been very popular, and we have used funds to pay for the instructor to come in and lead the session.

Harborne Baptist Church is located in the heart of Edgbaston Constituency which includes the Wards of Harborne, Quinton, Edgbaston and Bartley Green. Besides being a Christian place of worship, we also provide a venue for an number of groups that meet throughout the week, some run by the church but others by outside organisations. Most of our current groups meet weekly or monthly. Some of these are: Place of Welcome, courses run by Lordswood Medical Group, their Social Prescribers and Birmingham Adult Education for their patients, Harborne Community Cafe (powered by The Real Junk Food Project Central), various University of the 3rd Age (U3A) groups, Co-Dependents Anonymous, Ukrainian Guests & Hosts Coffee Morning, Alcoholics Anonymous, Harborne Dance School, Birmingham Fibromyalgia UK Support Group and Southlink Charter Centre (a user-led mental health drop in centre). Various groups have been able to arrange drop in sessions to run alongside our Place of Welcome; these include Age UK / Edgbaston Neighbourhood Network Scheme to facilitate access to the Household Support Fund and Digital Literacy Project.

We've recently received funding through the Celebrating Communities Fund and the Commonwealth Games to enable us to offer our space to community groups for little or no charge. Following on from this and the continuing challenges around the costs of energy, especially in the coming winter months, we see a need in our community to provide a safe, warm, welcoming space for people to gather to participate in a variety of activities for no addtional cost to them.
