More about our impact
The environment
Our project has helped the environment by reducing waste and promoting a culture of reuse. By offering a shared library of tools, we've minimized the need for individuals to purchase rarely-used equipment, lowering overall consumption and reducing the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing and shipping. Through our workshops and upcoming Repair Café, we also encourage repair over replacement—helping to extend the life of everyday items and keep them out of landfill.
The local economy
The Walsall Tool Shack has supported the local economy by empowering residents to take on DIY, repair, and home improvement projects without the high cost of purchasing tools. This has enabled more people to maintain and improve their homes affordably, while also opening up opportunities for small-scale tradespeople and entrepreneurs who may not have the resources to invest in a full tool kit. Additionally, by collaborating with local suppliers and makers, and encouraging skill-sharing within the community, the project has stimulated local enterprise and helped retain economic value within Walsall.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The Walsall Tool Shack has played a key role in increasing volunteering, skills development, and educational opportunities within the community. By recruiting local volunteers to help manage the tool library, deliver inductions, and run workshops, we’ve created meaningful ways for people to contribute their time and skills. Our free training sessions on safe tool use and DIY techniques have empowered individuals with practical knowledge, increasing their confidence and employability. As the project grows, we’ve also begun laying the groundwork for future job opportunities through partnerships with local organisations and plans for expanded services such as a Repair Café and Community Scrapstore.
Arts, culture & heritage
By removing barriers to making and repair, we’ve helped preserve traditional craft skills and supported grassroots cultural activity. In doing so, the project has empowered local creatives to bring their ideas to life, contributing to a more vibrant and expressive community landscape.
Activity, health and leisure
The Walsall Tool Shack has promoted activity, health, and leisure by encouraging residents to get hands-on with DIY, gardening, and creative projects—activities that support physical movement, mental wellbeing, and a sense of personal achievement. By making tools easily accessible, we've enabled people to spend more time outdoors maintaining gardens, building community spaces, or taking on personal projects that reduce screen time and promote active lifestyles. Our workshops and social environment have also provided opportunities for connection, reducing isolation and supporting positive mental health through purposeful, practical engagement.
