The idea
Voices of Exodus is a youth-led gospel choir based at the Northside Youth Community Centre, creating a positive space where young people can sing, perform and grow in confidence through music. The project responds to the need for creative opportunities that support wellbeing, build community and give young people a sense of purpose. Alongside vocal training and performances, members will be mentored in all aspects of running a choir – from singing and directing to event planning, management, branding, design and social media. This hands-on experience helps young people develop valuable transferable skills including leadership, teamwork, communication and creativity.
Funding will support weekly rehearsals, mentoring sessions, equipment and community performances. Participants will gain confidence, practical skills and a strong sense of belonging.
What we'll deliver
- branding and logo for the choir
- record rehearsal tracks for choir members
- weekly rehearsals and workshops
- an end of year concert/showcase
- at least two performances in the local community
- record an original arrangement
Why it's a great idea
Confidence & wellbeing: Singing together improves mood, reduces stress and helps young people express themselves in a supportive environment.
• Transferable skills: Members gain leadership, teamwork, communication and organisational skills through mentoring in directing rehearsals, planning performances and running the choir.
• Creative & digital skills: Young people learn branding, design and social media while helping shape the choir’s identity and promotion.
• Opportunities & aspiration: Participants develop performance experience, public speaking confidence and practical skills that support future education, employment and creative careers.
• Community connection: Performances bring people together, celebrate gospel music and create positive opportunities for young people in Edmonton.
• Youth leadership: The project empowers young people to take ownership and become role models for others in their community.
