The Pony Club That Gives Everyone The Chance To Ride

“There are a number of reasons why these particular children are not able to take up these kind of opportunities; a lack of access, the cost, and also because of an ongoing stereotype that horse riding is the reserve of the wealthy and middle class,” explained Freedom. “There were families reluctant to get involved. I wanted to change that and open up the world of equestrianism.”

As well as riding, the Pony Club helps kids develop their confidence, social skills and self esteem. It provides a unique, friendly therapeutic environment where new friendships are made.

More about our impact

More about our impact

The environment

The environment

We have helped the environment primarily through providing our Pony Club members information and guidance in ways they can help the environment. We believe that is the first step to helping the environment. What is key is how that is put into action. Our goal is to have a totally eco-friendly equestrian academy.

The local economy

The local economy

We are big supporters of local businesses. It was key for us to work closely with businesses within our local community. For example, we have teamed up with Tack Shack an Equestrian shop in the heart of the city. Our aim is for them to spearhead our own brand of Equestrian clothing. We have also teamed up with a company called Mindful Warriors. They provide yoga sessions for the children as a key part to what we do is focus on well-being fr everybody who is a part of The Urban Equestrian Academy. By leading the way it shows other organisations to see how other local businesses can work together to deliver services that share a common goal.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

Our project has increased volunteering and education in a unique way. We have formed a collaboration with De Montfort Univesity to help in achieving it’s commitment to the Public Good, to challenge convention and create transformational impact for current and prospective DMU students as well as to the city we call home - Leicester. We are working closely with DMU’s Equestrian Student Society to provide volunteering opportunities for our programmes. Andy Collop De Monfort Univerisity's deputy Vice-Chancellor has joined our ‘Urban Equestrian Advisory Board’ which we have recently launched. We are also working with DMU Local to provide additional volunteering opportunities for students and also the local and wider community.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

Our groundbreaking project has helped arts, culture and heritage in such a unique way. We have spearheaded a programme called Horses, History & Heritage that has enabled our Junior Pony Club members to experience culture and heritage on so many levels. Their highlight was a trip to the UK armed Forces Equestrian Championships where they were special guests. In regards to arts we are creating opportunities for creative people to help us with several film projects about the equestrian world.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

We provided 1142 young people with horse riding lessons. They have had the opportunity to be involved in physical activity that has built their confidence and improved their wellbeing. Being in the countryside has enabled them to connect with nature and experience a leisure activity that is life changing.
