The idea
The Upton Shuttle bus will be a demand-responsive figure of 8 route that visits one side of Upton, stops in the centre and then crosses the river to visit villages on the other side, bringing people back over into Upton. We were inspired by the community spirit seen during the pandemic, where people were offering help to their neighbours, and want to reflect this kindness within the community. The project will offer a service that responds to the difficulties caused by reductions in public transport, increased fuel costs and challenges faced by small independent retailers. Initially it will be a weekly service supported by local volunteers where people will ring and book a seat, and we will also offer home pick-ups for those unable to access a convenient point. The minibus will cater for wheelchairs and the route will always be flexible according to local demand. Reduced congestion in the town centre will free up parking for tourists to the area helping local businesses to thrive.
What we'll deliver
- A new weekly bus service for Upton on Severn
Why it's a great idea
The Upton Shuttle project will offer solutions for travel in and around Upton. which will connect the surrounding villages with the town itself, and will connect residents to amenities such as the doctors surgery, the new supermarket and the community centre.
Regular promotion of the service will encourage people to go out, helping them to connect with each other and reduce loneliness and isolation.
The project will promote public transport use as a more environmentally friendly option, helping to reduce pollution and reduce congestion in the quaint, narrow streets in the town centre. It will
encourage families to access local green spaces without having to drive and access parking, freeing up parking for the many tourists to the area to enjoy the riverside attractions, hospitality venues and independent shops alongside the local residents.
Local volunteer drivers will become ambassadors for the town, fostering a sense of pride in the community.
