We wish to create a tree sculpture in the Park. An excellent opportunity has arisen with an oak tree that unfortunately lost its top structure in a heavy storm, but the trunk is in very good condition. This stump is about 9 metres tall, and it would lend itself to be carved. It is located near the top lake in the Park next to a main foot path in a very visual area. We wish to work with a tree sculpture artist, Shane Green, (you can see his work atwww.Yorkshirecarver.com). to carve the tree with a theme of all the wildlife in the Park. To aid the design it is the intention to involve the children from the local school to draw the wildlife and creatures they see in the Park and the artist will then interpret these into the carving.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
. Health & Wellbeing: By investing in a permanent accessible creative attraction in the Park we hope to improve our local community asset. Creating a space for activity and play, and therefore helping to improve mental and physical health across all ages. The project is for all visitors and we believe it will attract many new people to the Park. The Park currently had no external pieces of art and we hope this first permanent project may encourage further art work to be displayed and created making Temple Newsam an even more attractive place to come and enjoy. We feel Temple Newsam gives a great deal of joy to its many visitors and helps them not just physically in walking around the Park but also helps with their mental well being. This sculpture would enhance that mental and physical experience. Inclusive Growth: We intend that this project will help provide a greater understanding of the Park contributing to positive feelings of identity and pride in the school children involved
Steps to get it done:
There will be a prominent piece of new visual art at Temple Newsam Park. Children from a local school will have participated in its creation. An artists will have been supported to create an original piece of work for the benefit of the community. As well as asking our own members and the schoolchildren, we are planning to have a visitor survey following the completion of the project which will ask (a) have they enjoyed the sculpture, (b) has it encouraged them to come to the park more frequently (c) would they like to see more artwork in the Park. If this feedback is positive, we are hoping this would be the start of other external artwork in the Park. We believe that more artwork in the park will make the Park very much more attractive to visitors and this will increase revenue at the café, the farm, and the House. We will work with the Temple Newsam Marketing Team to post on social media about the project and we will monitor engagement with the posts.
