The idea
A large-scale, ambitious, epic laser installation that will bring Lancaster Castle to life in a way never seen before, while celebrating the architecture of the castle itself. As the colours shift, the courtyard will be immersed in a horizon of poetic light tones and voices echoing real and imagined Lancashire Lore.
This site-specific, custom laser experience will invite Light Up Lancaster’s audience to explore the transformative power of sensory art, fostering a deep connection with the Lancashire’s rich history.
A specially composed soundscape will intertwine Lancashire folklore, via a collaboration with Lancaster Lore, an opensource community dedicated to reviving the living stories and myths of Lancaster, and engagement across the county capturing tales and stories unique to Lancashire. The aim is to reintroduce tales rooted in every corner of the county, from the iconic Lancaster Castle to the surrounding Lancashire landscape. It will also feature short extracts from

Why it's a great idea
This project will make a bold statement about the distinctive nature of the county’s history, it’s people and the tales passed down through generations. It will be a flagship project that highlights the rich voices from across Lancashire in a stunning creative visual and audio experience – and an experience that will be free for all!
It will also create a sense of pride in Lancaster and Lancashire by presenting a large-scale, highly ambitious work that is more often expected to be seen in major cities. As an audience member said in 2024 about Light Up Lancaster: ‘I never thought that I would be able to see so much world class art in a small city like ours.’ Likewise, this project will create a world class experience for up to 30,000 people at Lancaster Castle. It will be family friendly, accessible and relevant.
